For a while now most websites that I visit when using Firefox browser, even My website, a bar appears at the top of the page that says:

Firefox prevented this page from automatically reloading

I have been meaning to look into that and try to stop it as soon as I got time, but tonight as I was working on a website and surfing the web, it did it so many times that I decided to make time
to find a fix if at all possible!

I did get the annoying behavior stopped then I decided to share the fix with readers of my blog in case it may help others who are annoyed by that annoying behaviour also.

First I tried searching for “Firefox prevented this page from automatically reloading” and the answer I found several times was this:
See: Tools > Options > Advanced > General : Accessibility : [ ] “Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page”.

However, I do not like that option for obvious security reasons, for example, a specially crafted webpage could redirect you to a malicious page that is serving up generous helpings of malware for example. And I DO want to be warned if a malicious page tries to redirect me without my knowledge so that option was Not for me, so I decided that If that was the only fix that I would keep on clicking allow as each time Firefox popped up the bar at the top of the page saying ” Firefox prevented this page from automatically reloading!” even as annoying as it had become, I mean it was really starting to irk me when I was trying to work on a website or something, and it kept doing that and I would keep clicking Allow! until I almost exceeded the lifetime cycles of the poor switches in my mouse I think!
Luckily however, I discovered a solution that worked for me.

After rejecting the first solution that I found online, I did a little investigating and snooping around under the hood of Firefox and I stumbled upon an option that I like better.
I used it successfully on Linux with Firefox version 15.0 and on Windows with Firefox version 14.0.1.

  1. You do realize that Toggling the Accessibility.blockautorefresh configuration accomplishes the exact same thing as checking/unchecking the Tools > Options > Advanced > General : Accessibility : [ ] “Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page”? Check for yourself. When you toggle the configuration to “true”, the accessibility option (warning) will be checked. When you toggle the configuration to “false”, the accessibility option will be unchecked.

    • Thanks for the Info. Klepto :)
      I hadn’t thought of that.
I figured that Accessibility.blockautorefresh only determined whether or not automatic page refreshes within Firefox were allowed.
